Ghostriders 1968-1975

If necessity is the mother of invention, the AC-130 gunship was definitely her offspring.

Ghostriders: Mors De Caelis is a comprehensive history of AC-130 gunship combat operations in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The story begins with the first AC-130 in 1968, and ends in 1975 at the end of the war in Vietnam. It tells the life and death stories of Spectre crews, who faced extreme danger while hunting trucks on the Ho Chi Minh Trail and providing fire support for US and allied ground forces. Though the AC-130 was credited with 10,000 trucks destroyed, this phenomenal achievement came with a hefty price. Fifty-two Spectre crewmen and six AC-130s were lost during combat operations in Laos and Vietnam.

Written in third-person omniscient point of view by an experienced combat veteran and Spectre Historian, all aspects of the story are derived from official declassified records and personal interviews. The level of detail and context figuratively puts the reader in the aircraft as an observer, flying alongside a Spectre crew in combat. Above all, this is the story of Spectre—accurate, detailed, compelling, and unique.

WW II Tuskegee Airman and friend Col. Charles McGee promoted to Brigadier General by President Trump on Feb. 4, 2020

As a military historian, nothing provides insights better than first person observations, captured for all time. John Frederick's book is a window into the past, when celebrities were larger than life. His first person accounts of these legendary performers increases our knowledge of American history in general, and the history of Hollywood's past in particular. Entertaining while educational, I highly recommend this book for high school age persons and above. Personally, I consider it one of the best nonfiction and non-military books I have ever read.

Major Scott Huesing

Scott A. Huesing is a retired USMC Infantry Major with over 24 years of service, both enlisted and as a commissioned officer. His career spanned 10 deployments and he conducted operations in over 60 countries worldwide.

During his deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa he planned, led, and conducted hundreds of combat missions under some of the most austere and challenging conditions.

He had the privilege to command Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines as part of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), Special Operations Capable (SOC) while attached to 1-9 Infantry Battalion ("Manchu"), 1st Brigade Combat Team (1 BCT "Ready First"), United States Army (USA) as part of the Surge Strategy in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.

See Major Scott Huesing's Fox and Friends interview that aired on February 20, 2018 regarding the book and his Marines at

In  September 2018 Major Scott Huesing and Maj Gen James E. Livingston held a symposium and discussion on the Battle of Ramadi, Iraq in 2006. Link is below.

Generalleutnant Johannes Steinhoff

Knight's Cross, Oak Leaves and Swords from the Colin D. Heaton Collection. This was a Jaenecke replacement for the original wartime damaged medal owned by Luftwaffe ace and legend Generalleutnant Johannes Steinhoff, and given to the author by his wife Ursula after his death. The original slightly damaged medals presented during the war are still in the family's possession. The post war replacements given to veterans after 1957 do not have the Swastika in the center, but Oak Leaves are embossed.

Steinhoff was Hans-Joachim Marseille's second commanding officer in WW II, and his recollections of the maverick pilot are legendary and all contained in the book. See Steinhoff's own recollections also in The German Aces Speak II.

FOUR WAR BOER: The Century and Life
                    of Pieter Arnoldus Krueler

Released in 2014

from Casemate Publishing

Go to the Four War Boer Page for more Information and a full photo layout of Pieter Krueler's Life

See the interview of May 3, 2013 with Colin about the new book on Southern Sense Radio.  Link is below

The amazing life of Pieter Krueler (1885-1986) provides a window into a full century of conflict such as one man rarely experiences. Four-War Boer traces Krueler's highly colorful life from the Second Boer War, where he first served as a 14-year-old scout, through his service in World War I with the German Army in East Africa, to the Spanish Civil War to World War II, this time with the Allies, and on into the latter part of the 20th century, when he served as a mercenary during the 1960s Congo Crisis.

This material includes a wealth of fascinating new information, and breaks the great secrecy surrounding Rhodesian and South African special operations, as unveiled through the experience of a man who was a founding father of counterinsurgency in Africa.

Review of our manuscript from the late WW II fighter ace Barrie Davis

Howdy, my friend Colin!
After numerous unexpected interruptions, I have read The German Aces Speak II. It is a great book, revealing the personalities of the four Aces in a manner never done previously. Their words, as recorded so well by the book's author, were quite modest, especially when I realized they were spoken by men who had accomplished so much.
In recording the interviews, you did remarkably well in communicating the characters of all four pilots, and I was convinced that even after hundreds of victories and many times cheating death itself, these men were of a special breed. Despite the problems they had to solve, they retained the honor and fortitude that saw them through a losing war.
I feel indebted to you for recording the four interviews. Thanks from an old-time fighter jock.
Barrie Davis.

Review of The Star of Africa from WW II Fighter Ace Art Fiedler

Colin and Anne-Marie, after reading about Marseille, I can state that  I would have found engaging him in combat to be the highlight of my success. I also know of the honor and chivalry exhibited by the Luftwaffe men I came to know. The greatest tragedy of that war was that we young men had to do our job. It is good to see that historians such as yourself continue to treat all of us, even our former enemies with the deepest respect where warranted. Excellent book, great imagery, and I thoroughly enjoyed all of your works, but this was special. Keep writing and keep on flying.
